Malaysian Physician Loses $130K in Crypto Investment Scam
A 67-year-old doctor in Ipoh became the latest victim of cryptocurrency fraud, transferring RM320,000 ($78,000) to suspected scammers after being approached via TikTok. The perpetrator, posing as an acquaintance, convinced the victim to invest in a digital asset scheme promising unrealistic returns.
Police reports indicate the scam followed a familiar pattern: initial contact through social media, elaborate explanations of fake investment opportunities, and multiple transfers to various accounts under different corporate names. The scheme unraveled when the victim attempted to withdraw phantom profits.
In a desperate bid for recourse, the victim turned to Facebook groups like 'International Justice Malaysia' - only to potentially encounter secondary scams. This case highlights the persistent risks of social media-originated crypto fraud targeting inexperienced investors.
